On what date was Louis Vuitton the founder born?
Answer
4 August 1821
Answer
4 August 1821
Louis Vuitton the founder was born on 4 August 1821.
He was born in Anchay, in France’s Jura region, to a family connected with farming, carpentry and other practical trades. The rural setting helped shape his familiarity with wood and craftsmanship, skills that later became central to his trunk-making career.
Vuitton left home as a teenager and eventually walked roughly 400 kilometres to Paris. In 1837, he began an apprenticeship with Monsieur Maréchal, a box-maker and packer whose work introduced him to wealthy travellers and the demanding craft of preparing luggage. He established his own workshop in 1854.
A common mix-up is to confuse Vuitton’s birth date with dates associated with his business. The Louis Vuitton company was founded in 1854, while the famous Monogram canvas appeared in 1896, four years after Vuitton’s death. His birthplace is also sometimes identified as Lavans-sur-Valouse, the commune associated with Anchay.
