On what date was J.R.R. Tolkien born in 1892?

The story behind the answer

J.R.R. Tolkien was born on 3 January 1892.

His full name was John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, and he was born in Bloemfontein, in the Orange Free State, then a British-colonial territory in southern Africa. His family later returned to England, where Tolkien spent most of his childhood.

Tolkien’s birthday is sometimes confused with 22 September, which is the shared fictional birthday of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins in Middle-earth. That date is celebrated by Tolkien fans as Hobbit Day, but it is not Tolkien’s birthday.

The January date is also remembered by Tolkien societies and readers because it marks the beginning of the life of the philologist whose invented languages, legends, and novels shaped modern fantasy literature.
