On what date was Guy Fawkes born, according to the traditional historical record?

The story behind the answer

Guy Fawkes was born on 13 April 1570, according to the traditional historical record.

He was born in York and was baptised at St Michael le Belfrey, a church near York Minster. His father, Edward Fawkes, worked as a proctor and advocate of the ecclesiastical courts, while his mother was Edith Blake.

Fawkes later became a Catholic convert and served as a soldier in the Spanish Netherlands. His military experience with explosives helped make him valuable to the Gunpowder Plot conspirators, although Robert Catesby was the plot’s principal organiser.

A common mistake is to treat Guy Fawkes as though “Guy” were his original family name. He was baptised and initially known as Guido Fawkes; “Guy” became the English form by which he is remembered.
