On what date was Fiji's national flag adopted?
Answer
10 October 1970
Answer
10 October 1970
Fiji's national flag was adopted on 10 October 1970, the day the country became independent from the United Kingdom.
The design is a light-blue British Blue Ensign featuring Fiji's shield in the fly. The blue field evokes the Pacific Ocean, while the Union Jack records Fiji's historical relationship with Britain. The shield contains symbols including sugar cane, a coconut palm, bananas and a dove of peace.
Fiji became a republic in 1987, but the flag was retained. A proposed replacement process launched in 2015 was ultimately abandoned, so the 1970 design remains the national flag. A common mix-up is confusing its adoption date with 9 October, when the Union Jack was lowered before independence took effect at midnight.
