How many yellow stars appear on Niue's flag?

The story behind the answer

How many yellow stars appear on Niue's flag? Five yellow stars appear on Niue's flag.

The design places the Union Jack in the upper-left canton of a golden-yellow field. One larger star sits inside a blue disk at the centre of the Union Jack, while four smaller stars form a diamond around it. Together, these make five stars.

The four outer stars represent the Southern Cross and Niue's close association with New Zealand. The central star is set against a blue disk representing the sea surrounding the island. The yellow field symbolises sunshine and the warm relationship between Niue and New Zealand.

Niue adopted this flag on 15 October 1975. A common mistake is to count only the four stars arranged around the disk, or to count the Union Jack's design without noticing the larger central star. The legally prescribed flag therefore has five yellow stars in total.
