On what date is Veterans Day observed annually in the United States?

The story behind the answer

Veterans Day is observed annually in the United States on November 11.

The date commemorates the armistice that ended major hostilities between the Allies and Germany in World War I. The agreement took effect at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, making November 11 a lasting symbol of peace and military service.

The United States first called the holiday Armistice Day. Congress later changed its name to Veterans Day in 1954, broadening its purpose to honor all U.S. military veterans, not only those connected with World War I.

Veterans Day is often confused with Memorial Day. Memorial Day honors service members who died while serving, whereas Veterans Day honors everyone who served honorably in the U.S. armed forces, living or deceased. When November 11 falls on a weekend, the federal observance may be shifted to a nearby weekday, but the date itself remains November 11.
