On what date did the TV series Lost first premiere in the United States?

The story behind the answer

Lost first premiered in the United States on September 22, 2004. The two-hour pilot introduced survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 after their aircraft crashed on a mysterious Pacific island.

The premiere aired on ABC and established the series’ central ensemble, including Jack Shephard, Kate Austen, and John Locke. Its opening image—Jack awakening in bamboo and discovering the crash survivors—became one of television’s most recognizable introductions.

Lost was created by Jeffrey Lieber, J. J. Abrams, and Damon Lindelof. Although the series eventually became known for flashbacks, flash-forwards, and time travel, its first episode primarily presents the island mystery and the survivors’ immediate struggle to live.

The show ran for six seasons and concluded in 2010. A common mix-up is confusing the U.S. premiere date with the date of the series finale or with the later international broadcast dates.
