On what date did the Philippines observe V-J Day after Japan’s 1945 surrender?

The story behind the answer

The Philippines observed V-J Day on September 3, 1945, after Japan’s surrender.

Different countries used different dates for V-J Day because news of Japan’s surrender traveled across time zones and because some governments emphasized the announcement while others emphasized the formal signing. The Philippines marked September 3, the date associated with the surrender of Japanese General Tomoyuki Yamashita there.

Japan announced its acceptance of the Allied terms on August 15 in Japan, while the United States commonly commemorated the announcement on August 14 because of the time difference. The formal signing aboard USS Missouri took place on September 2.

The Philippine date is therefore distinct from both the Japanese radio announcement and the Tokyo Bay ceremony. It reflects the local historical significance of Japan’s capitulation in the Philippines, where fierce fighting had continued during 1944 and 1945.
