On what date did the New York Stock Exchange experience “Black Tuesday” during the 1929 crash?

The story behind the answer

Black Tuesday, the climactic trading day of the 1929 Wall Street Crash, occurred on October 29, 1929.

On that day, approximately 16 million shares changed hands on the New York Stock Exchange, a record at the time. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell about 12%, adding to the severe losses recorded during the preceding week.

The crash did not happen on a single day. Panic selling began on Black Thursday, October 24, intensified on Black Monday, October 28, and reached its most famous point on Black Tuesday. The market then continued falling for years, with the Dow ultimately reaching its low in July 1932.

Black Tuesday is often treated as the symbolic beginning of the Great Depression, but historians distinguish the stock-market collapse from the broader economic depression. Banking failures, reduced production, unemployment, debt, and international financial problems all contributed to the prolonged downturn.
