Which 1929 US stock-market collapse began on Black Thursday and intensified on Black Tuesday?

The story behind the answer

The 1929 US stock-market collapse that began on Black Thursday and intensified on Black Tuesday was the Wall Street Crash of 1929.

After years of rising share prices and widespread speculation, the market became highly vulnerable in October 1929. On 24 October, known as Black Thursday, heavy selling pressured prices. Temporary support from major bankers briefly steadied the market, but confidence did not return.

Selling accelerated on Black Monday, 28 October, and Black Tuesday, 29 October. Trading volume reached unprecedented levels, and many shares lost a large portion of their value. The crash did not by itself cause every feature of the Great Depression, but it became a powerful symbol and intensified the economic contraction.

The crash is sometimes described as a single day, but it was a sequence of trading collapses over several days. The Dow Jones Industrial Average eventually fell far below its 1929 peak before reaching its low in 1932.
