On what date did the Berlin Wall open to unrestricted crossings?

The story behind the answer

The Berlin Wall opened to unrestricted crossings on 9 November 1989. The announcement followed weeks of mass demonstrations and growing pressure for freedom of movement in East Germany.

At a press conference that evening, GDR official Günter Schabowski read out new travel rules and, when asked when they would take effect, said they were effective immediately. The statement was not intended to produce an instant mass opening, but crowds quickly gathered at border crossings.

Border guards, lacking clear instructions and facing thousands of people, eventually allowed travelers through. Berliners then climbed onto the wall, celebrated, and began breaking pieces from it. The event became known as the fall of the Berlin Wall.

German reunification followed on 3 October 1990. The wall was not removed completely in a single night; much of the remaining structure was dismantled during the following months, while sections were preserved as historical monuments.
