On what date did the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend begin?

The 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend began on 21 August 2026.

The season opened with Arsenal hosting Coventry City in the first match of the campaign. The game was scheduled for Friday evening, making it the opening fixture of the league season rather than a traditional Saturday start.

The date was later than the usual mid-August Premier League launch because the 2026 FIFA World Cup took place during the summer. The league calendar was adjusted, with the 2026–27 campaign scheduled to run from 21 August 2026 to 30 May 2027.

The opening round continued from Friday through Monday. Saturday featured four matches, Sunday had three, and Fulham versus Chelsea completed the round on Monday evening. This four-day structure gave the opening weekend a broader schedule than the phrase “opening day” might suggest.
