On what date did the 2026–27 Premier League opening match kick off?

The 2026–27 Premier League opening match kicked off on 21 August 2026.

The season began with Arsenal hosting newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium. The Friday fixture started at 20:00 BST, giving the champions the first match of their title defence.

The campaign began later than some recent Premier League seasons because the 2026 FIFA World Cup was held during the summer. The opening round then continued across Saturday, Sunday and Monday rather than being completed on one day.

The date is sometimes confused with 22 August, when Hull City hosted Manchester United in the first Saturday match. However, Arsenal versus Coventry was the season’s first fixture, making 21 August the correct date.
