On what date did Japan announce its surrender in V-J Day broadcasts in Japan?

The story behind the answer

Japan announced its surrender in V-J Day broadcasts in Japan on August 15, 1945.

Emperor Hirohito’s recorded radio address was broadcast shortly after noon in Japan Standard Time. It announced that Japan had accepted the terms of the Potsdam Declaration, although the emperor used formal language that many listeners found difficult to understand.

The date can cause confusion because the announcement was heard on August 14 in the United States and some other parts of the Americas, owing to time-zone differences. The formal surrender ceremony took place later, on September 2, 1945.

August 15 is commonly associated with V-J Day in Japan, Britain, and several Commonwealth countries. The United States also used August 14 for the announcement but officially recognized September 2 for the formal surrender.
