On what date did Google begin trading publicly on the NASDAQ stock exchange?

The story behind the answer

Google began trading publicly on the NASDAQ stock exchange on August 19, 2004.

The initial public offering (IPO) raised about $1.67 billion and valued Google at roughly $23 billion. The company offered 19,605,052 shares in an unusual online auction intended to broaden participation beyond traditional investment banks and institutional investors.

Google’s IPO followed several years of rapid growth in web search and online advertising. Before going public, the company had been privately funded by investors including Kleiner Perkins and Sequoia Capital, as well as by an early $100,000 investment from Sun Microsystems co-founder Andy Bechtolsheim.

The IPO is sometimes confused with Google’s founding or incorporation. Larry Page and Sergey Brin began developing the search engine at Stanford University in 1996, while Google was incorporated as a company in September 1998. In 2015, Google became a subsidiary of Alphabet, its newly created parent company.
