The artificial-intelligence company DeepMind was founded in 2010.
Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg, and Mustafa Suleyman founded the company in London in 2010. It was initially known as DeepMind Technologies and pursued general-purpose artificial intelligence, combining machine learning with ideas inspired by neuroscience.
Google acquired DeepMind in 2014. The organization later became Google DeepMind after Google combined it with Google Brain in 2023. Its research produced AlphaGo, which defeated professional Go player Lee Sedol in 2016, and AlphaFold, which predicted many protein structures with exceptional accuracy.
DeepMind’s founding year is often confused with its acquisition year. The company existed independently for four years before Google bought it, while the later Google DeepMind name describes a subsequent organizational merger.
