On what date did George Washington’s army win the Battle of Trenton?

The story behind the answer

George Washington’s army won the Battle of Trenton on December 26, 1776.

Washington led Continental Army troops across the Delaware River during the night of December 25–26 and attacked the Hessian garrison at Trenton, New Jersey, the following morning. The surprise victory captured most of the opposing force and produced few American casualties.

The battle came during a difficult period for the revolutionary cause. American forces had been driven out of New York and were retreating through New Jersey, while enlistments were expiring and morale was low.

Trenton did not end the war, but it helped restore confidence in the Continental Army. Washington followed the victory with another successful action at Princeton on January 3, 1777, strengthening the American position in the New Jersey campaign.
