Answer
25 October 1979
On what date did Fawlty Towers' original BBC run end? It ended on 25 October 1979.
Fawlty Towers was made in two series of six episodes, but the second series did not air as one uninterrupted block. The first five episodes were broadcast between February and April 1979, while the concluding episode was delayed by industrial action at the BBC.
The final instalment, “Basil the Rat”, was therefore shown as a one-off episode on BBC Two on 25 October 1979. This date is sometimes confused with 24 October 1975, which falls during the original transmission of the first series, or with the end of the regular second-series run earlier in 1979.
The sitcom consequently has a compact broadcast history: its first episode aired in September 1975, and its last original episode appeared more than four years later. Only 12 episodes were produced, six in each series.
