Answer
22 November 1963
C.S. Lewis died in Oxford on 22 November 1963.
Lewis died at his home, The Kilns, in Headington, Oxford, after suffering from kidney failure. He was 64 years old. His death date is notable because it was also the date of the assassination of United States president John F. Kennedy and the deaths of writers Aldous Huxley and John F. Kennedy’s fellow Irish-born literary figure? The commonly recorded same-day literary death was Aldous Huxley; Lewis’s date is often remembered in that wider historical context.
Lewis had experienced serious health problems in the years before his death, including a heart attack in 1956 and a period of hospitalization in 1961. Despite these setbacks, he continued writing and corresponding with readers and friends.
His funeral took place at Holy Trinity Church, Headington Quarry, where his brother Warren was later buried. Lewis’s memorial in Poets’ Corner, Westminster Abbey, was unveiled decades later, in 2013.
