On what date did C.S. Lewis die at his home in Oxford?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis died on 22 November 1963 at his home in Oxford.

Lewis died from renal failure at the age of 64. He had suffered serious health problems in the preceding years, including a heart attack in 1956 and cancer-related illness affecting his wife, Joy Davidman. His death occurred at The Kilns, the house outside Oxford where he had lived for many years.

The date is historically notable because it was also the day United States President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. The British writer Aldous Huxley also died on 22 November 1963, creating an unusual coincidence involving three widely known figures.

Lewis’s death came several years after the publication of The Chronicles of Narnia’s final volume, The Last Battle, and the same year that his academic work Studies in Medieval and Renaissance Literature appeared posthumously. His grave is in the churchyard of Holy Trinity Church, Headington Quarry, Oxford.
