On what date did Britain sign the Treaty of Paris that ended the American Revolutionary War?

The story behind the answer

Britain signed the Treaty of Paris on September 3, 1783, ending the American Revolutionary War.

The treaty formally recognized the United States as free, sovereign, and independent. It also established boundaries that gave the new nation territory east of the Mississippi River, south of the Great Lakes, and north of Spanish Florida, although later disputes and treaties changed some details.

American negotiators included Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, John Jay, Henry Laurens, and Thomas Jefferson was appointed but did not participate in the negotiations. Britain signed through David Hartley. The agreement was part of the wider Peace of Paris, which also included separate settlements involving France, Spain, and the Dutch Republic.

The signing followed the American victory at Yorktown in 1781, but peace negotiations and ratification took time. The Confederation Congress ratified the treaty on January 14, 1784, in Annapolis, Maryland.
