The Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration celebrated by America250 in Independence Hall.
The building stood in Philadelphia as the Pennsylvania State House when the Declaration was adopted in 1776. It later became known as Independence Hall because of its central role in the creation of the United States.
The Second Continental Congress met there during the Revolutionary War. The building was also the meeting place where delegates debated and signed the Articles of Confederation and later held the Constitutional Convention in 1787. This makes Independence Hall important to both American independence and the formation of the federal government.
The name can create a historical mix-up: “Independence Hall” is the building, while Independence National Historical Park is the larger protected area surrounding several sites in Philadelphia. The Liberty Bell was associated with the same Pennsylvania State House but is now displayed in a separate building nearby.
