The track uses previously unpublished writing by Johnny Cash, turning his poetry, lyrics, and letters into a new musical composition. Jewel’s performance appears on the album’s expanded edition and presents Cash’s words in a contemporary country-influenced setting.
"Forever Words" was released in 2018 as a collaborative project rather than a conventional album of unreleased Cash recordings. A wide range of artists created music around his surviving writings, including Chris Cornell, Elvis Costello, John Mellencamp, Rosanne Cash, Brad Paisley, and Kris Kristofferson with Willie Nelson.
The title connects the music to Cash’s posthumous literary collection, "Forever Words: The Unknown Poems," edited by poet Paul Muldoon. A common mix-up is to credit the song to Cash himself because the words originated with him; however, Jewel is the artist who performed "Body on Body" on the tribute album.
