EF5 is the Enhanced Fujita scale rating associated with an “incredible” tornado.
The Enhanced Fujita scale classifies tornado intensity from EF0 through EF5 using damage indicators and estimated three-second wind gusts. EF5 represents the highest category on the scale, with estimated winds of at least 200 mph, or about 322 km/h. The rating is based on observed damage rather than a direct measurement of every wind inside the tornado.
The United States adopted the Enhanced Fujita scale in 2007, replacing the original Fujita scale. The newer system includes improved engineering knowledge and more detailed damage indicators. There is no EF6 category. Because tornadoes are small and short-lived, instruments often miss their maximum winds, making post-storm damage surveys essential.
