Which location has the world’s highest average annual rainfall?

The story behind the answer

Mawsynram has the world’s highest average annual rainfall.

Mawsynram is a village in Meghalaya, India, on the southern edge of the Khasi Hills. Moisture-laden monsoon winds from the Bay of Bengal are funneled toward the hills, where rising air cools and condenses. The steep terrain therefore produces persistent orographic rainfall during the summer monsoon.

The village is often reported as receiving about 11,872 millimetres of rain in an average year, though totals vary substantially from year to year. Nearby Cherrapunji, also called Sohra, holds several individual rainfall records and is frequently confused with Mawsynram because both places are exceptionally wet.

“Wettest place” can mean average annual rainfall or the greatest rainfall in a particular period. Mawsynram is associated with the long-term average, while other locations may hold shorter-duration records.
