Georgia O'Keeffe was born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, on November 15, 1887.

She was the second of seven children in a farming family. Her parents, Francis Calyxtus O'Keeffe and Ida Totto O'Keeffe, lived near Sun Prairie, a small community close to Madison. The rural landscape of Wisconsin formed the earliest setting of her life, although her mature art became strongly associated with New Mexico.

O'Keeffe began art lessons as a child and later studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League of New York. Because her public image is so closely linked with the Southwest, people sometimes mistakenly assume she was born there. In fact, she did not first visit New Mexico until 1917, decades after her Wisconsin birth.

Sun Prairie remains an important biographical landmark because it identifies O'Keeffe's Midwestern beginnings before her career took her to New York and the American Southwest.
