Rory prints several sample invitations and asks her mother to choose a quotation for the front. Lorelai rejects a sentimental line attributed to Sinclair Lewis and a dramatic passage by Lord Byron before selecting the final option.
That last quotation reads, “We have buried the putrid corpse of liberty,” and is attributed in the episode to Benito Mussolini, Italy’s fascist dictator. Lorelai’s enthusiastic “Perfect!” makes the choice funny precisely because the wording is spectacularly grim for a wedding invitation.
The invitation never becomes part of a completed wedding: later in the same episode, Lorelai realizes she does not truly love Max and calls off the ceremony. Viewers sometimes remember the quote as a general Mussolini reference, but the quiz’s shorter answer, “Mussolini,” identifies the same person and is the canonical response used in the scene.
