On “Gilmore Girls,” the dancing rabbi doll in Lorelai’s hose plays “Hava Nagila.”
The scene appears in Season 2, Episode 20, “Help Wanted,” when Lorelai discovers the novelty doll among her belongings. Its dancing movement and Jewish-rabbi design are played for the show’s characteristically oddball humor, while the tune provides an instantly recognizable musical punchline.
“Hava Nagila” is a Hebrew song title meaning “Let us rejoice.” Although often treated as an ancient traditional song, its modern form emerged in the early 20th century. Musicologist Abraham Zevi Idelsohn transcribed a melody associated with a Hasidic nigun, and Hebrew words were later added. The song became strongly associated with Jewish celebrations and the hora, a circle dance.
A common mix-up is calling the tune simply “the hora.” The hora is the dance traditionally performed to music such as “Hava Nagila”; it is not the song’s title. Another misconception is that “Hava Nagila” was originally written as a pop novelty number—it developed from religious and folk-music traditions before becoming internationally familiar through celebrations, recordings, and film.
