On Gilmore Girls, Stars Hollow High School’s sports teams are called the Minutemen. The name appears on school signage and is used for the school’s athletic teams, including its basketball team.
The nickname refers to the Minutemen of the American Revolutionary period. These colonial militia members were associated with being ready to respond at a minute’s notice, making the name a natural fit for an American high-school mascot with a strongly patriotic identity.
The show uses the school’s athletics as part of its background rather than making sports a central storyline. A school sign seen early in the series identifies Stars Hollow High as the home of the Minutemen and references a 1997–98 championship season. The rival team is referred to as the Wildcats, a detail that can cause confusion, but the Wildcats are the opposing school—not Stars Hollow High’s team.
