On "Gilmore Girls," Luke's Diner occupies the building that formerly housed a hardware store run by Luke's father.
Luke Danes explains that his father operated the hardware business in the same Stars Hollow location. After his father's death, Luke closed the store and converted the space into a diner because he did not share his father's passion for the hardware trade and preferred the idea of running a restaurant.
The building's earlier identity remains visible in the show's setting. The exterior has been associated with the name William's Hardware, referring to Luke's father, William Danes. Luke also uses the former hardware-store office above the diner as his apartment, reinforcing the connection between the family business and the restaurant.
A common mix-up comes from the diner’s real-world filming history. The pilot used an exterior in Unionville, Ontario, that was actually a hardware store, and that visual detail was incorporated into Luke's fictional backstory. Within the series, however, the canonical former business is a hardware store—not a bakery, pharmacy, or bookstore.
