Georgia O'Keeffe made her home at Ghost Ranch near Abiquiú, New Mexico.
O'Keeffe first visited New Mexico in 1929 and returned regularly for decades. She was drawn to the region's cliffs, deserts, bones, adobe buildings, and intense light. Ghost Ranch, north of Abiquiú, became one of her most important working environments.
She eventually acquired a house at Ghost Ranch, but she also maintained a home in the village of Abiquiú. The two places supported different aspects of her life and work. Her paintings of the surrounding landscape helped make New Mexico a defining part of her public identity.
Taos and Santa Fe are also strongly associated with New Mexico art, which can cause confusion. O'Keeffe's New Mexico homes were specifically connected with Ghost Ranch and Abiquiú. Roswell is better known for its association with the 1947 UFO incident, not as O'Keeffe's home base.
