Narcos character Valeria Vélez is based on Colombian journalist Virginia Vallejo. The series fictionalizes Vallejo as Vélez, a prominent journalist whose relationship with Pablo Escobar places her close to the Medellín cartel and its political world.

Vallejo was a major Colombian media personality: she worked as a television and radio journalist, anchorwoman, columnist, and interviewer of political and cultural figures. Her public relationship with Escobar became one of the most recognizable parts of her life and later informed her memoir Loving Pablo, Hating Escobar.

Narcos compresses and reshapes real events for drama, so Vélez should not be treated as a complete biographical portrait. The show also includes Diana Turbay, another real Colombian journalist who was kidnapped by the Medellín cartel; she is a distinct character and not the real-life model for Vélez.
