Mortal Kombat II is the fourth numbered installment in the Mortal Kombat film series. It follows the 1995 film Mortal Kombat, the 1997 sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, and the 2021 reboot Mortal Kombat.
The title can make the chronology confusing because Mortal Kombat II sounds like a direct follow-up to the 1995 movie. In franchise terms, however, the 2026 film is a sequel to the 2021 reboot and is counted as the fourth theatrical film based on the games. The earlier two films belong to the original continuity, while the 2021 and 2026 films form a newer continuity.
The film was directed by Simon McQuoid and written by Jeremy Slater. Its story continues the reboot’s Earthrealm-versus-Outworld conflict and adds major game characters such as Johnny Cage, Kitana, Jade, and Shao Kahn.
A third film was reported to be in development, but that potential project does not change Mortal Kombat II’s position as the fourth released film.
