Milwaukee Deep is named after which U.S. Navy cruiser?

Milwaukee Deep is named after the USS Milwaukee.

The ship was an Omaha-class light cruiser of the United States Navy, commissioned in 1923. On 14 February 1939, while operating in the Puerto Rico Trench, USS Milwaukee recorded an exceptionally deep sounding of 28,680 feet, or about 8,740 metres. The feature subsequently became known as Milwaukee Deep.

The cruiser was the third U.S. Navy ship to carry the Milwaukee name. That name ultimately referred to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, so the undersea feature’s name connects a Navy vessel with the city rather than with a nearby island or geographic landmark.

Milwaukee Deep is associated with the Puerto Rico Trench in the Atlantic Ocean. Older reports and some media accounts also used the name Brownson Deep, which can create confusion, but USS Milwaukee is the vessel traditionally credited with the sounding and the source of the name used in this quiz. The cruiser was later transferred to the Soviet Navy in 1944 and renamed Murmansk.
