Meta Platforms changed its corporate name from Facebook in 2021.
The company announced the rebrand on October 28, 2021, changing its corporate name to Meta Platforms, Inc. The new name reflected chief executive Mark Zuckerberg’s focus on building the metaverse, a term for interconnected virtual and augmented digital environments.
Facebook remained the name of the company’s social-networking service, so the rebrand did not mean that the Facebook app itself disappeared. Meta also owns Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, alongside its Reality Labs hardware and software division.
The company’s stock ticker changed from FB to META in June 2022. This distinction matters when reading older market reports: “Facebook” may refer to the social network, the former corporate name, or the company’s broader business. Meta’s advertising operations continue to provide most of its revenue, while Reality Labs has focused on virtual- and augmented-reality products.
