Matt Santos is a congressman from which state?

Matt Santos is a congressman from Texas. In The West Wing, he represents a Texas district in the U.S. House before launching his presidential campaign.

Santos enters the story in the sixth season, when Josh Lyman approaches him about running for president. The character is played by Jimmy Smits, whose campaign storyline becomes the central political arc of the final two seasons.

Texas is part of Santos's political identity throughout the series, while his former office as Houston's mayor helps establish his executive experience. A common mix-up is confusing Santos with Arnold Vinick, the Republican presidential candidate and senator from California, or with fictional President Jed Bartlet, who represents New Hampshire.

Santos ultimately wins the Democratic nomination and the general election, becoming president in the series finale. His rise from Texas congressman to president drives much of the show's closing narrative.
