Little Dark Age is an album released by MGMT. It is the American rock band’s fourth studio album and arrived on February 9, 2018, through Columbia Records. The record followed the band’s self-titled 2013 album and marked a return to a more overtly pop-oriented sound after a long break from touring and recording.
MGMT members Andrew VanWyngarden and Benjamin Goldwasser began regrouping in late 2015 after taking time away from music. They made the album with producer Dave Fridmann and drummer-producer Patrick Wimberly. The title track, “Little Dark Age,” was released as the lead single in 2017, followed by “When You Die,” “Hand It Over,” and “Me and Michael.”
The album is often described as synth-pop, electropop, and psychedelic pop. It is sometimes confused with the title song, but “Little Dark Age” refers to both the 2017 single and the 2018 album. The album peaked at No. 35 on the Billboard 200 and is frequently viewed as a partial return to the accessible style of MGMT’s debut, Oracular Spectacular.
