Lake Maracaibo is located in which country?

The story behind the answer

Lake Maracaibo is located in Venezuela.

The lake lies in northwestern Venezuela, mainly within the Maracaibo Basin and around the states of Zulia, Trujillo, and Mérida. Its northern opening connects with the Gulf of Venezuela, so its water is brackish in places. Because of that connection, geographers sometimes describe Maracaibo as an estuary or semi-enclosed bay rather than a strictly isolated freshwater lake, but Venezuela remains the unambiguous country answer.

Maracaibo is famous for the Catatumbo River, its largest tributary, and for Catatumbo lightning, a recurring thunderstorm phenomenon over the southern lake. The basin is also one of Venezuela’s most important oil-producing regions. Drilling, pipelines, agriculture, sewage, and oil pollution have all created serious environmental pressures.

The lake covers about 13,512 square kilometres and is associated with the city of Maracaibo. A major historical event took place here on July 24, 1823, when Venezuelan forces won the Battle of Lake Maracaibo during the country’s war of independence. The General Rafael Urdaneta Bridge crosses the lake’s northern strait.
