Lake Constance borders Germany, Austria, and which other country?

The story behind the answer

Lake Constance borders Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

The lake sits at the northern foot of the Alps where the three countries meet. In German it is called Bodensee, while English uses the name Lake Constance after the city of Konstanz. Its shores include parts of Germany’s Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria, Austria’s Vorarlberg, and several Swiss cantons.

Lake Constance is made up of the Upper Lake, Lower Lake, and the connecting Seerhein. The Alpine Rhine flows into the southeastern end, and the High Rhine carries water westward toward Basel and eventually the Rhine system. The lake is an important source of drinking water for southwestern Germany.

A subtle complication is that the precise international boundaries across parts of the open lake are disputed. Switzerland generally favors a middle-line boundary, Austria has treated some waters as a condominium, and Germany has maintained an ambiguous position. That legal dispute does not change the standard geographic answer: the three bordering countries are Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
