JPMorgan Chase was formed in 2000 through the merger of J.P. Morgan and Chase Manhattan Bank.
The merger united two major American financial institutions with different historical strengths. J.P. Morgan had deep roots in investment banking and corporate finance, while Chase Manhattan had developed a major commercial-banking franchise. The combined company was initially known as J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.
JPMorgan Chase later expanded through another major transaction: it acquired Bank One in 2004. Jamie Dimon, who had led Bank One, became chief executive of the combined company and helped guide its growth. The company acquired Washington Mutual's banking operations during the 2008 financial crisis.
Chemical Bank is a common source of confusion because it acquired Chase Manhattan in 1996, while the surviving corporate name and modern lineage center on Chase. Bank One was a later acquisition, not the 2000 merger partner.
