JPMorgan Chase, one of the world's largest banking companies by market capitalization, was formed in which year?

The story behind the answer

JPMorgan Chase, one of the world's largest banking companies by market capitalization, was formed in 2000.

The company was created when Chase Manhattan Corporation merged with J.P. Morgan & Co. The combination joined two major American banking lineages and produced the company known today as JPMorgan Chase & Co.

Its history is older than the 2000 merger. J.P. Morgan & Co. grew from nineteenth-century banking businesses, while Chase Manhattan itself traced important roots to the Bank of The Manhattan Company, founded in 1799.

A later landmark was JPMorgan Chase's 2004 merger with Bank One, which brought Jamie Dimon into the combined company. The bank also acquired Washington Mutual's banking operations during the 2008 financial crisis. These transactions are separate from the 2000 formation.
