JPMorgan Chase & Co. was created in 2000 through the merger of J.P. Morgan and which bank?

The story behind the answer

JPMorgan Chase & Co. was created in 2000 through the merger of J.P. Morgan and Chase Manhattan Bank.

The merger combined J.P. Morgan, a historic investment-banking and financial-services institution, with Chase Manhattan, a major commercial bank. The resulting company was initially called J.P. Morgan Chase. It later became JPMorgan Chase & Co. after acquiring Bank One in 2004, bringing Jamie Dimon into the organization as president and chief operating officer.

JPMorgan Chase expanded again in 2008 when it acquired the deposits and most assets of Washington Mutual during the financial crisis. It also purchased the investment-banking operations of Bear Stearns that year. These transactions helped create the broad business structure the company has today, spanning consumer banking, commercial banking, investment banking, asset management, and payments.

JPMorgan Chase is one of the largest U.S. banks by assets and among the world’s most valuable publicly traded financial companies. The 2000 merger is distinct from the later Bank One transaction and from the 2008 emergency acquisitions.
