In X-Men: Apocalypse, which actor plays the ancient mutant Apocalypse?

The story behind the answer

Oscar Isaac plays the ancient mutant Apocalypse in X-Men: Apocalypse.

The character, also called En Sabah Nur, is portrayed as one of the world’s earliest mutants. After awakening in the 1980s, Apocalypse gathers powerful mutants and seeks to reshape civilization according to his belief that only the strongest deserve to survive.

Oscar Isaac’s performance is heavily transformed by prosthetic makeup and costume effects. The film also features younger versions of several established X-Men characters, including James McAvoy as Charles Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Magneto and Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique.

X-Men: Apocalypse was directed by Bryan Singer and released in 2016. It follows X-Men: Days of Future Past in the prequel continuity. The film’s Apocalypse is distinct from the comic-book character’s many later stories, although the movie retains his ancient origin, mutant abilities and survival-of-the-fittest philosophy.
