In which year was Lewis Carroll born?

The story behind the answer

Lewis Carroll was born in 1832.

Lewis Carroll was the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, who was born on 27 January 1832 at All Saints' Vicarage in Daresbury, Cheshire, England. He was the eldest boy and the third-oldest of 11 children in a clerical family.

Carroll is best known for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, but he also worked as a mathematician, logician, photographer, poet and Anglican deacon. His real name is a common source of quiz confusion: “Lewis Carroll” was his literary identity, while Charles Lutwidge Dodgson was the name on his birth record.

He studied at Rugby School and Christ Church, Oxford, where he later taught mathematics. Carroll died in Guildford, Surrey, in 1898, shortly before his 66th birthday. His dates are sometimes remembered alongside those of Queen Victoria, whose long reign overlapped almost all of his adult career.
