J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Children of Húrin was published as a standalone book in 2007.
Christopher Tolkien edited the book from his father’s writings, and HarperCollins published it on 17 April 2007. The narrative follows Túrin Turambar and his sister Niënor during the First Age, when Morgoth’s curse brings destruction to their family.
The story was not entirely new in 2007. Tolkien had published shorter or partial versions in earlier works, including The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales. The standalone edition gathered and shaped the fuller narrative into a continuous book, with illustrations by Alan Lee. This explains why the title can be described both as a posthumous 2007 publication and as a story with much older textual roots.
