In which year was Guru Arjan executed?

Guru Arjan was executed in 1606, during the reign of the Mughal emperor Jahangir.

Guru Arjan was the fifth Sikh Guru and led the Sikh community from 1581 until his death. He compiled the Adi Granth, the first major collection of Sikh scripture, and oversaw the completion and installation of the scripture at Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar. His growing religious and social influence made him an important figure in Punjab.

Jahangir ordered Guru Arjan’s arrest after accusing him of supporting his rebellious son, Khusrau Mirza. Sikh tradition also emphasizes the Guru’s refusal to remove passages from the scripture or abandon his faith. He died in Lahore in 1606 and is regarded in Sikh tradition as the first Sikh Guru to be martyred.

The exact circumstances of his death are described differently in historical sources: some accounts emphasize torture and execution, while others describe forced drowning or death during torture. The year itself, however, is firmly associated with Guru Arjan’s martyrdom and the succession of his son, Guru Hargobind.
