In which year did Rocket League introduce the Rocket Pass (battle pass) system?

The story behind the answer

Rocket League introduced its Rocket Pass battle-pass system in 2018. Psyonix added the feature in September of that year, giving players a progression track filled with unlockable customization items.

The system was designed around tiers or levels that players advance by playing Rocket League and completing challenges. The free version of each pass offered rewards to all players, while a premium version unlocked additional items and included benefits such as faster progression. Each pass was built around a limited season and its own collection of cosmetic content.

Rocket Pass was part of Rocket League’s shift toward an ongoing games-as-a-service model. The game had already used other forms of cosmetic monetization, including Crates, but the pass offered a more predictable progression path: players could see the reward track and work toward specific tiers instead of relying entirely on random drops.

The Rocket Pass is often confused with the free-to-play transition. The pass arrived in 2018, two years before Rocket League became free-to-play in September 2020. The later transition expanded access to the game but did not mark the beginning of Rocket Pass.
