Nelson Mandela’s presidency of South Africa ended in 1999.
Mandela served as president from 10 May 1994 until 14 June 1999. He was the country’s first Black president and led the Government of National Unity during the first years after apartheid-era rule ended.
Mandela chose not to seek a second presidential term. Thabo Mbeki succeeded him in June 1999, continuing the African National Congress administration.
The end of Mandela’s presidency does not mark the end of his public life. He continued working on peace, reconciliation, rural development, children’s welfare and HIV/AIDS awareness through organizations established or supported after his presidency.
