In which year did London Underground’s Night Tube service begin?

The story behind the answer

London Underground’s Night Tube service began in 2016.

The first Night Tube services started on 19 August 2016 on the Central and Victoria lines. The Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines followed later that year. The service was designed to provide overnight trains on Friday and Saturday nights, improving links for late-night workers, visitors and people travelling through central London.

Night Tube was introduced after detailed planning involving train operations, station staffing, engineering access and safety arrangements. Running passenger trains overnight meant that some maintenance work had to be reorganised around the reduced weekday operating window.

Night Tube does not mean that every Underground line or every station operates all night. Coverage is limited to participating routes and stations, and planned closures can affect service. It is also separate from the Night Bus network, which operates on roads. The Victoria line was among the first routes to launch, but the overall Night Tube programme expanded over several months rather than appearing across the entire network on one date.
