In which year did Georgia O'Keeffe's first solo museum exhibition open at the Brooklyn Museum?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe's first solo museum exhibition opened at the Brooklyn Museum in 1927.

The exhibition, Georgia O'Keeffe, took place at the Brooklyn Museum in New York from October 1927 to January 1928. It was an important institutional recognition of an artist whose work had previously been presented through commercial galleries and group exhibitions.

By this point, O'Keeffe was already known for enlarged flower paintings, abstract forms, New York city scenes, and Southwestern subjects. Her work had been promoted by Alfred Stieglitz, whose gallery exhibitions helped establish her reputation in the American modernist art world.

The museum show should not be confused with her first solo gallery exhibition, which took place earlier at Stieglitz's 291 gallery in 1917. Nor should it be confused with later major retrospectives, such as the 1970 exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art. The Brooklyn Museum event marked her first solo museum presentation.
